Which networks will my eSIM use in Japan?
Your eSIM connects to NTT Docomo and SoftBank, Japan's two largest networks — 5G where it's available, 4G/LTE everywhere else. Between them you're covered across the Shinkansen routes, the Tokyo and Osaka metro systems, and the towns and coastlines most trips pass through. Signal thins only deep in the mountains.
How much data do I need for a trip to Japan?
Our Japan plans come in 5 GB and 10 GB, both valid for 7 days. For a week of maps, translation, train apps and messaging, 5 GB is comfortable. Take 10 GB if you'll be sharing a hotspot, uploading photos and video, or on video calls regularly. If you run low, you can top up without buying a new eSIM.
Does the Japan eSIM work in other countries?
No — it works in Japan only. If your trip continues to Korea, Taiwan or elsewhere, buy the eSIM for each destination. They can all sit on your phone at once, and you switch between them in your settings when you land.
Can I use my Japan eSIM as a hotspot?
Yes. Personal Hotspot works normally, so you can share your connection with a laptop or a travel companion. Tethered data comes out of the same allowance and it goes quickly — if you plan to tether daily, start with the 10 GB plan.
Will I keep my own number in Japan?
Yes. The Japan eSIM is data-only and installs alongside the SIM you already use, so your usual number stays reachable for WhatsApp, iMessage and SMS. Turn data roaming off on your home SIM and on for the Japan eSIM (Settings → Mobile Data → Japan eSIM → Data Roaming) — all your data then goes through the local plan, with no roaming bill waiting at home. The Japan eSIM itself doesn't include a Japanese number, calls or texts.
When should I install my eSIM before flying to Japan?
Install before you leave, while you still have wifi — downloading the profile needs a connection, and the arrivals hall is not where you want to be troubleshooting. Installing early costs you nothing: you have at least a year from purchase to activate, and the 7 days only start counting when the eSIM first connects to a Japanese network.
